Frequently Asked Questions
How much does credit utilization affect my score? โพ
Credit utilization makes up approximately 30% of your FICO score โ the second most important factor after payment history. At under 10% utilization, you'll see the highest scores. Above 30%, scores start to drop meaningfully. Above 50%, the impact is significant. Above 90% (maxed out cards), the damage is severe. The good news: utilization changes are reflected immediately in your score โ paying down debt can improve your score within one billing cycle.
Is it better to have zero balance or a small balance? โพ
Contrary to popular myth, you don't need to carry a balance to build credit. The optimal strategy is to use your cards regularly (which keeps them active and shows payment history) but pay the full balance before the statement closes โ giving you 0% utilization on that card. If you want to show utilization activity, let a small amount (1-5%) report to the bureaus by not paying until after the statement closes, then pay in full by the due date.
Does utilization affect all cards or just overall? โพ
Both matter. FICO looks at individual card utilization (each card) AND overall utilization (all cards combined). Having one card at 80% can hurt your score even if your overall utilization is 25%. Try to keep each individual card below 30%, not just the aggregate. This is why having one card with a high balance is worse than spreading the same balance across multiple cards.
