📖 How to Use the Grocery List
1
Type and add items
Type any item in the text field and press Enter or click Add. Items are automatically sorted into store aisles — produce, meat, dairy, pantry, and more. You can add a quantity in the Qty field, or manually choose a category from the dropdown if the auto-sort picks the wrong one.
2
Check off as you shop
Tap or click the checkbox next to any item to mark it as found. Checked items fade out but stay on the list so you don't lose track. The stats bar at the top shows your progress (items remaining / total). Use Clear checked after checkout to tidy the list.
3
Star your weekly staples
Click the ⭐ star next to any item to save it as a staple. Starred items appear in the Starred staples section at the bottom — click any chip to instantly add it back to your list next week. Perfect for eggs, milk, bread, and other things you buy every trip.
4
Everything saves automatically
Your list is saved in your browser every time you make a change. Close the tab, come back later — your items are still there. Use the Quick add chips to instantly add your most common staples at the top of the page for fast list-building.
Shopping tip: The aisle-based layout mirrors how most grocery stores are physically arranged. Shop produce first, then work through meat, dairy, pantry, and frozen last (to keep frozen items cold). With a pre-sorted list, the average grocery trip is 20–25% faster than shopping without a list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the list save when I close the browser? ▾
Yes — your grocery list is saved automatically in your browser's local storage every time you add or check off an item. When you return to the page on the same device and browser, your full list will be there. Your data is stored entirely on your device and is never sent to a server. Note that private/incognito windows do not save data between sessions.
How does the auto-sort work? ▾
When you add an item, the tool scans the item name against a built-in ingredient database to predict the right store aisle. Common items like "milk" go to Dairy, "chicken" to Meat, "apples" to Produce, "pasta" to Pantry, and so on. If the auto-sort is wrong, you can manually select the right category from the dropdown before adding. You can also change any item's category after adding by deleting and re-adding it.
Can I use this on my phone while shopping? ▾
Yes — the list is fully responsive and works on any smartphone browser. Open it in Safari, Chrome, or any browser on your phone and it will look and work just like on desktop. For the best experience, you can add ToolStack to your home screen: in Safari tap Share → Add to Home Screen; in Chrome tap the menu → Add to Home Screen. This creates a shortcut icon that opens the grocery list instantly.
How to Use the Grocery List
Build, organise, and check off your shopping list — sorted by store section automatically.
01
Add items
Type item names and press Enter or click Add. Items are automatically categorised by section (produce, dairy, bakery, etc.) so your list is organised by aisle.
02
Adjust quantities
Tap the + and − buttons to set how many of each item you need. The quantity appears next to the item name.
03
Check off as you shop
Tap an item as you pick it up. Checked items move to the bottom of their category so your active list stays uncluttered.
04
Clear completed items
Once you're done shopping, use 'Clear checked' to remove completed items and start fresh for next time.
05
Save for next week
Your list saves in your browser automatically. Common staples stay on the list; remove what you have and add new items each week.
💡 Shop the perimeter of the store first (produce, dairy, meat) where the fresh, whole foods are. The inner aisles are mostly processed foods — having a list prevents impulse buys there.
