Why four formulas?

No single formula is universally accurate. The Hamwi formula (1964) is used by dietitians; Devine (1974) is used in drug dosing; Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) were later refinements. Showing all four gives you a range rather than a false single number — the average across formulas is more reliable than any individual one.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

These formulas estimate ideal weight from height alone, and don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. A heavily muscled person may be "overweight" by these measures despite excellent health. Use this alongside BMI and body fat estimates for a fuller picture.

How to reach your ideal weight

If you're above your range, a modest calorie deficit is the evidence-based approach. Use the Calorie Deficit Calculator to find your daily target and the Macro Calculator to set your protein, carb, and fat targets. Pair with strength training to preserve muscle as you lose fat.

Body recomposition

If you're within the "healthy" range but want to change your body composition — more muscle, less fat — your scale weight may not change much at all. Resistance training with adequate protein (1.6–2.2g/kg) builds muscle while fat loss occurs simultaneously. The number on the scale matters less than how you feel and perform.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal weight for my height?
It varies by sex and formula. For a 175cm male, the range across formulas is roughly 68–76kg. For a 165cm female, approximately 57–65kg. Enter your height above for a personalised answer. Remember these are statistical guidelines — individual body composition varies significantly.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None is universally superior. The Devine formula is the most commonly used in clinical settings (primarily for medication dosing). Robinson and Miller were developed as refinements. The Hamwi formula, while older, is widely used by registered dietitians. Using the average of all four gives a more robust estimate than trusting any single one.
Is ideal weight the same for men and women?
No. All four formulas produce different results for male and female physiology at the same height. On average, the ideal weight for males is 5–10kg higher than for females of the same height, reflecting differences in average muscle mass, bone density, and body composition between sexes.
Can I be healthy above my ideal weight range?
Yes. These formulas are statistical averages, not individual verdicts. Athletes with high muscle mass routinely exceed ideal weight ranges while having excellent metabolic health. Conversely, some people within the "ideal" range can have poor metabolic markers. Body composition, fitness level, blood pressure, and blood glucose are more meaningful health indicators than scale weight alone.

How to Use the Ideal Weight Calculator

See your ideal weight range from four medical formulas side by side.

01
Enter your height
Use your measured height — shoes off. Select metric or imperial.
02
Select your sex
The formulas use biological sex as a variable. The results will differ slightly between the Hamwi, Devine, Robinson, and Miller formulas.
03
Review all four formulas
Each formula was developed for different clinical contexts. The range between highest and lowest gives you a realistic healthy weight window rather than a single number.
04
Understand the limitations
These formulas were developed for clinical reference, not individual targets. Muscle mass, bone density, and body composition all affect what a healthy weight looks like for you personally.
05
Use as a reference, not a goal
Ideal weight calculators work best as a rough sanity check. Your actual healthy weight is best determined with a doctor who knows your full health picture.
💡
💡 These formulas are most accurate for people of average height (5'2"–5'10" / 158–178cm). They tend to underestimate for taller individuals and overestimate for shorter ones.
